Red, White & Black: Reflections on How Black Struggle Shaped White America

This event provides a timely discussion on how Black Struggle has shaped (and continues to shape) America and the American legal tradition throughout this nation's history. The panel brings together three eminent law professors/legal historians: Dr. Martha S. Jones, Dr. T. J. Davis, and Professor Kevin Brown, along with a rising young scholar, Dr. James Roane. Dr. Jones discusses how Black women defied both racism and sexism to fight for the ballot, and how they wielded political power to secure the equality and dignity of all persons. This is the topic of her latest book, Vanguard: How Black Women Broke Barriers, Won the Vote, and Insisted on Equality for All. Professor Brown examines, more broadly, how Black Struggle has impacted American law and jurisprudence through the Civil Rights Movement. Dr. Davis addresses the historical impact of Black Struggle on the U.S. Constitution, writ large.
